Graduates on Parade
|
 |
 |
An audience of prominent industry figures, fashion designers, Project Runway
Australia 2009 finalists and proud parents witnessed a vibrant collection of
work from graduating Sydney Campus students, and Melbourne's first and second
year fashion students at the annual Whitehouse Exhibition & Parade in
November. "Designer of the Year" and "Student of the Year" were awarded to
standout students in each year and campus as well as the prestigious scholarship
to study in Florence, Italy later this year.
The originality and diversity of the Interior Design and Styling students
work was displayed in a collection of illustrations, photographic work and
creative installations beside the Whitehouse open-air courtyard where
up-and-coming designers mingled with those already established.
Looking forward, 2010 will celebrate the first graduating cohort of Bachelor
of Design students from the Melbourne Campus in what promises to be an exciting
end of year show. Watch this space!

The Future is in his Hands
|
 |
 |
Only a year ago, Daniel began his Bachelor of Design specialising in Styling
& Creative Direction with the aspiration to become a trend forecaster or
designer. "I've always enjoyed following what other designers are doing and
being up to date in what I wear and looking good," he says. Combining his
studies with part time work at David Jones, Calderazzo recognises, “...your
success depends on how good you are and how you express fashion and your
creativity”.
Daniel is not the only male, nor the only Daniel to succeed through
Whitehouse. Daniel Avakian, a 2003 graduate has gone on to become one of
Australia’s top emerging designers.
Trading in cars for creativity – a tow truck driver in another life – Avakian
launched his self-titled label after debuting his collection at Rosemount
Australian Fashion Week 2007. Having been featured in Vogue Australia and Oyster
magazines, Daniel's exposure continues to grow. He credits his design ability
largely to his eduation at Whitehouse, “the knowledge and skills I gained over
the three years at Whitehouse has been phenomenal; the experience has broadened
my imagination and views on design, giving me the freedom to develop and nourish
my character both as a person and a designer" tells Avakian.

Flying High for Summer Fun
|
 |
 |
A two-hour plane ride and 800 kilometres later, Lucy Munro of Glen Innes High
School landed in Sydney to attend the Whitehouse Institute of Design’s summer
workshop program.
Wanting to be more expressive with her designs and drawings Lucy enroled in
the Design Beginnings Fashion Illustration workshop where she has since met many
students who have also traveled far to build their experience in fashion
design.
Lucy describes herself as modest, original and old fashioned; drawing
inspiration from elegant vintage pieces, and the designs of Alexander McQueen
and Collette Dinnigan. With future aspirations to move overseas and open a store
for her own label, Lucy’s taken the first step in the right
direction.

Meet the 2009 "Designer of the Year" for Interior
Design

Therese Moussa is a dynamic and diverse designer with a passion for textile
and interior design. Her work experience with textile designers has resulted in
four textile placement prints being issued for major fashion brands including
Manning Carter, Country Road, Mink Pink and Trent Nathan.
Therese’s passion for textile design inspired her awardwinning graduate
design for a sculptural urban memorial walk on Cockatoo Island. This moving
memorial reveals the hidden female history of the island in which young girls
who were interned in a reform institution on the island used sewing skills to
find work and freedom from the terrifying mistreatment within the institution.
Using repeating patterns of Cor-ten steel and tensile fabric panels the
memorial takes you of a journey through fear to freedom.Therese’s design works
in harmony with the island while also creating interest from the harbour and
habour foreshore. It shows a sensitivity to both the heritage of the island the
aspirations of the Sustainable Sydney 2030 targets. Therese is equally adept at
textile, spatial, object and interior design offering an exciting
interdisciplinary approach to all of her design work.
